Over 100,000 people came for the official public opening of the east side. On December 22, 1989, a world changing event happened when West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl walked through Brandenburg Gate, welcomed by the East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow. This magnificent sculpture aloft the Brandenburg Gate may be seen from a long distance. A new insignia was made for the staff of the goddess: a Prussian eagle and a wreath with the iron Cross in the centre. The iron cross was restored back to its rightful home on top of the Brandenburg Gate. In the late 1990s, two small buildings were built, replacing the destroyed pavilions. In November 1998, after the Berlin Wall fell, the 200 year old city gate hastily reinvented itself from division into the symbol of unity. This magnificent monument is woven into the history of Berlin and Germany. As such, it should be high on every visitor's list of things to see and do.

When the German army began to be short of reserves and Berlin was bombed by the Allies, the buildings flanking the square were destroyed. It was the largest piazza in Berlin, where the armed force would parade over the centuries, including the House of Hohenzollern and the German Democratic Republic. After the Battle of Paris against Napoleon and his troops, the square was renamed Pariser Platz. Up until 1814, Pariser Platz was known as Viereck (meaning "The Square" in English).
